Ready Speller publishes plain-English guides for anyone getting ready for a spelling bee: spellers preparing for a school, district or regional bee, the parents helping them practice, and the teachers running a classroom bee. Each guide answers one question, and answers it in the first paragraph.

How guides are written

  • Answer first. The opening paragraph gives you the answer. The rest of the page adds the detail.
  • Official sources. Rules come from the bee organizers who set them, and word meanings and origins come from major dictionaries. Every guide links to its sources.
  • Current season. Bee rules can change from year to year, so guides say which season’s rules they describe. Your own bee’s organizers have the final word.

Recommendations

Guides recommend a practice app or a book where they fit the topic. Descriptions come from each one’s official store listing. Some of the apps and books recommended here are made by the people who publish this site.

Not an official source

Ready Speller is not an official source for the Scripps National Spelling Bee or any other bee. Official rules come from each bee’s organizers, and names and trademarks belong to their owners.
